What Are Dental Veneers?
Dental veneers are thin shells of tooth-colored porcelain that are placed over the front-facing surfaces of the teeth to cover aesthetic imperfections. The natural-looking, durable porcelain can be used to conceal a single damaged tooth or a mouthful of cosmetic flaws. Generally, dental veneers are used to address teeth that are chipped, gapped, misaligned, misshapen, stained, or undersized.
The Process of Getting Veneers
The first step of the veneers process is your consultation. During this time, you will be able to discuss the goals that you have for your smile. This will help us to determine whether or not veneers are the right option for you.
Once it is confirmed that you make a good candidate for the procedure, a small portion of enamel is removed from the front-facing surface of the teeth and an impression is made. This impression is then sent to a dental laboratory where your veneers are crafted. In the meantime, you will be provided with temporary veneers to protect your smile and help you get used to how your veneers will feel. Once your veneers are ready, you can return to our dental office, where they will be adhered into place!
The Benefits of Veneers
Veneers have a wide variety of benefits. Here are just some of the ones that you can expect to experience:
- Stain-Resistant: Veneers are able to resist stains much better than your natural tooth enamel, so they can be used as long-term whitening solution.
- Long-Lasting: When cared for properly, veneers can last upwards of 15 years.
- Natural Appearance: Veneers are carefully placed so they look just like your natural tooth enamel.
- Customized: Dental veneers are crafted to be the perfect size, shape, and color necessary to blend in with the rest of your smile.
Veneer FAQs
Are Veneers Permanent?
Veneers don’t last forever, which means that you can’t necessarily call them permanent. However, it is necessary to remove a small amount of your enamel in order to make room for your veneers. If yours fall off, you’ll need to replace them to continue to protect the tooth underneath. For that reason, you could say that you’ll need veneers permanently, even if the actual restoration won’t last forever.
What Happens to the Teeth Under Veneers?
Patients naturally wonder whether the teeth underneath their veneers will be okay. Thankfully, there’s nothing to worry about—only a minimal amount of enamel is removed to make room for veneers, which means that your teeth will remain perfectly healthy. The only concern would be sensitivity, which is mitigated by the veneers themselves.
It is worth noting, however, that the teeth under the veneers are still susceptible to disease and decay. You’ll need to make sure that you continue to brush and floss as normal in order to limit the odds of oral health problems.
Can Veneers Be Used for Bite Corrections?
Veneers don’t involve moving the teeth, which means that they’re a little limited in what they can do to resolve bite misalignment. However, veneers are able to change the alignment of your smile by altering the shape of your teeth, which means that they can sometimes be used to address minor over- or underbites. They can also adequately address any gaps in your smile.
If you want more substantial changes to the alignment of your smile, you can try getting orthodontic treatment and then veneers.
Do Veneers Feel Like Real Teeth?
Veneers are crafted to fit your smile based on sophisticated impressions we’ll take of your teeth. They’re also made out of porcelain, a beautiful ceramic that looks and feels quite a bit like enamel. Both of these factors mean that you can expect your veneers to feel incredibly natural once they’re in your mouth.
While talking and eating with veneers will take a small amount of getting used to, you should be able to manage both in no time at all!
